Science Literacy Week

Join the Adventure!

From September 19-25, 2022, Future Energy Systems encourages you to join the adventure with thousands of other kids and families and dive into the Science Literacy Week.

Science Literacy Week showcases the many ways kids and families can explore and enjoy the diversity of Canadian science. Libraries, museums, science centres, schools and not-for-profits come together to highlight the books, movies, podcasts and events that share exciting stories of the science, discoveries and ingenuity shaping our lives. It’s about each and everyone’s unique relationship with science and how they live it. The 2022 Science Literacy Week is celebrated with Mathematics as the theme.

This program is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Are you smarter than a computer? Machine learning and you

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 4:30-5:30pm MT

Activity description: Machine learning has become incredibly important in solving important problems by harnessing the power of computers. In this activity, we will introduce the basic concepts of machine learning through relatable examples. We will use Quickdraw and Artbot, two programs that will help us understand how machine learning works. Both are available online, so all that is needed by way of supplies is an internet connection. Before the event, make sure that you can access the following websites:

Quickdraw   Artbot

This session is recommended for children aged 7 to 11 and families, but all are welcome.

Vinay Prasad is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. In his research, he uses machine learning to solve many challenges related to process engineering and energy systems.
